Scand 301 Intensive Elementary Finnish 1.

Scand 301 assumes no prior knowledge of Finnish and begins with the absolute basics. Because of the extensive daily contact, however, we move very quickly, and by the end of the term students are able to do the following things:

Introduce themselves, state their name, age, and place of residence.

Count and understand spoken numbers.

Buy groceries and other items and understand prices when spoken and written.

Ask and give directions in a city or countryside.

Tell time and the date.

Discuss things they want or do not want to do, orally and in writing.

Tell about things they like or do not like, orally and in writing.

Describe activities that they are required to do, orally and in writing.

Describe activities they are presently doing, orally and in writing.

Describe activities they have done in the past, orally and in writing.

We practice all the major case endings in the singular and learn and practice vocabulary for geography, body parts, clothing, housing, colors, weather and other topics of student interest. We usually sing one Finnish song each day for a week and often watch YouTube versions of it. Generally, we manage to cover about 12-14 chapters of the textbook Kuulostaa hyvältä.
