Part III. Italy. 52. Francesco [March 24, 1348]
It was only a matter of time before Bávlos would learn about St. Francis, the most Sámi of all the Italian saints, and certainly the most shamanic. Up till now, Bávlos has known mostly Dominicans, Benedictines, or secular clergy, with whom he has had varied relations. Now suddenly, he is in contact with the more emotive, less intellectual Franciscans, with their many tales of the simplicity and miraculous experiences of their founder, whose dealings with nature and animals made him unique in medieval Christianity. Suffice it to say, Bávlos will have more contact with this order in the coming final chapters of the novel.
