Part III. Italy. 44. Dinner at Master Simone's [February 27, 1348]

In this chapter I have included a lot of material that I learned about when living in Florence. The details on the old marketplace (Mercato vecchio) are all accurate, right down to the number of windows in the former church of Santa Maria in Campidoglio, a former site of one of Giotto's serene Madonnas. I had a lot of fun working in the intertextual relations with the Decameron, and in making Bávlos the source of Boccaccio's idea to have his characters flee to Mount Morello. In a coming chapter, you will read more about that mountain as a place of refuge and nature.
