Part II. The Hansa Lands and France. 28. Aache [November 4, 1347]
In this chapter, I wanted to mark Bávlos's shift from the Germanic language area of Europe to the Romance one. In Jacques, Bávlos comes in extended contact for the first time with a speaker of a Romance language. The experience is both surprising and confusing for Bávlos and yet also appealing, and we see him immediately trying to imitate the gestures, intonation, and joie de vivre of his new companion. After some rather uncomfortable meetings with people in and on the way to Köln, Bávlos deserves some enjoyment.
