Volume II: Place
Part of the four-volume Comparative History of Nordic Literary Cultures.
Volume 2: Place The prime concern of this volume is the concept of place, both as an entity constructed in literary texts and as a site of emplotted or depicted actions or processes. Place has always played an important role in Nordic literary cultures, both as textually constructed sites within texts (the focus of this volume) or as sites in which literature is produced, marketed, or disseminated (discussed in Volume 4). In exploring the literary treatment of place, we organize the volume into two main parts. The first (and larger) of these consists of an examination of different SCAPES. These consist of four concrete place categories: Landscapes, Seascapes, Lightscapes, Cityscapes, as well as two further categories that conceptualize place more figuratively: Wordscapes and Cyberscapes. Each of these categories is described in greater detail on the pages devoted to SCAPES (click HERE) The second part of the volume looks at PRACTICES: i.e., the ways in which characters interact with place in literary works. A focus on practices helps escape the pitfalls of reifying place within the volume, and permits an examination of the historically dynamic and culturally variable processes by which Nordic communities have sought to interact with place over time. More information about this part of the volume is supplied on the page PRACTICES (click HERE).
