Rather, they move: leaving old ways and relationships behind, observing or adopting new ones for the space of a journey or sometimes forever. The trader makes movement across space a source of livelihood, promoting the transfer of goods or skills from one place to another, be it by carrying them in a satchel, trucking them in a container car, or by attaching them to an email. The tourist seeks enjoyment and edification through experiencing new lands or peoples. Travelogues of Nordic denizens to other lands, or of strangers who come to observe life in the exotic North become major authorial activities, in the past as well as the present. Sometimes people choose or are forced to relocate altogether, severing old ties, establishing new relationships in an unfamiliar and potentially hostile society, where threats and opportunities commingle in a confusing, exhilarating, depressing, or humorous fashion.
