Conquering 4-5 essays. Discovery, Mapping, Subduing, Colonizing, Technologizing Appearing first as a vague periphery on maps of the world, the Nordic region eventually defined itself through a process of mapping, classification, and political control that sought to impose an unambiguous order on the seeming chaos of nature, local culture, or political or religious alignment. Monarchs and scientists worked in parallel to define borders, collect and define natural species, and explore new regions, such as polar zones or distant lands. They did so not only by physically encountering unruly spaces, but also by recording and recounting these encounters through texts, both fictional and nonfictional. Nature was subdued, threatening populations were infiltrated and brought under economic and political control. As science and technology developed further, it became seemingly possible to completely manage once-threatening spaces and people through regimens of surveillance, technological manipulation, or control.
