Part III. Italy. 42. Becoming Apprenticed. [January 4, 1348]

In this chapter, Bávlos begins to adjust to his new reality. He has reached the place where he is to stop, but does not know what Iesh means for him to do next. I wanted to depict Bávlos trying to figure out his next steps while entering into Italian society in a much more substantive way than he had done in any country before this on his journey. It is significant and characteristic that Bávlos gives his statue to Buonamico as a gift and that Buonamico uses it to curry favor with Bishop Luigi.
