 1. Part I Setting Out 12. The Crowded Ship [August 17, 1347]

This was a fun chapter to write. I love the legend of St. Henrik and have written about it in a chapter in a book I edited Sanctity in the North: Saints, Lives and Cults in Medieval Scandinavia (Toronto: U Toronto P, 2008). The detail of the oxen drawing the body to the place it should be deposited was common in medieval saints' legends and recurs later in the novel. The idea of putting all these characters on one boat is my tribute to American soap operas, where such things always happen.
